Houston NAP NAP September Book Drive

Please help us promote literacy among children currently living with their mothers that are receiving residential substance abuse treatment at Santa Maria Hostel. Our very own Houston NAP NAP member, Dr. Angela Nash with the University of Texas Health Science at Houston School of Nursing, provides healthcare to the children weekly and would like to promote the importance of reading as well. Ages of the children are newborn to 12 years old. Here is how you can help:

  1. Bring a book, new or gently used to this month’s educational meeting on September 17th. If you can not attend, we have NAP NAP Board Members at Texas Children’s Main and West Campus as well as UTMB that would be happy to transport any donated books.
  2. Donate! Cash, check or Venmo. Venmo payments can be made out to our Treasurer Rachel Barton @Rachel-Barton-16. Paypal also available with fees at: https://www.paypal.me/HoustonNAPNAP
  3. Dr. Nash is suggesting board books, picture books, and chapter books. She states that the children particularly enjoy funny stories.

Thank you for your generosity and for promoting literacy. Houston NAP NAP is committed to seeing ALL children succeed and thrive.

Dear Christi and NAPNAP friends,
I can't thank you enough for this book drive. The children at Santa Maria Hostel have frequently suffered multiple adverse childhood experiences, yet they show remarkable resilience! Books will not only entertain them (they are not allowed electronic devices or TV), but they will teach them the joy of reading! Plus books give the mothers new ways to bond with their children. A strong relational bond between mother and child is critical for promoting the mother's recovery and the child's well-being.
Thank you so very much!
