Houston NAPNAP Member Spotlight: Jennifer Mauney

Jennifer Alden Mauney is an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and Texas Children’s Hospital.  At Baylor she has worked as an instructor on faculty within the Section of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine since 2011, and clinically practices in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at Texas Children’s Hospital.     

Her education background includes a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Florida State University and a Master of Science in Nursing with the specialty of Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner from Duke University. Prior to becoming a nurse practitioner, she worked as a registered nurse in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at UF Health Shands Hospital at the University of Florida.  After training in North Carolina, she moved to Houston to work at BCM and Texas Children’s Hospital, initially within the PICU and then later within the CICU.    

She is an educator, providing training to Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) and medical trainees, precepting students, and lecturing within the critical care units and at the college.  She has taught clinically at the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing.  Presently, she is a Consulting Associate for Duke University School of Nursing teaching within the Master of Science in Nursing program.     

Jennifer’s leadership experience includes previously serving as an Associate Director of Critical Care Advanced Practice Providers and lead for the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit.  She has spoken nationally and internationally at conferences such as NAPNAP, Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society, and Pediatric Critical Care Summit of the Americas.  Additionally she has volunteered internationally serving pediatric critical care for earthquake relief in Haiti and pediatric cardiac surgery in Bolivia.   

Jennifer’s professional interests include APP role and career development, nurse practitioner education, mentorship, interprofessional education, disaster preparedness, and quality improvement. She loves providing care as part of the multidisciplinary team and is passionate about advanced practice education and the limitless opportunities to grow and to serve the community.   

Outside of work, she is currently in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program at Duke University with an additional focus in nursing education.  She loves being outside, playing with her Boxer, Ellie, and traveling, especially to the beach.
